In need of a trim 3/20/04
I decided to include my mothers hair story and progress to my journey. I hope that it will help others that are experiencing hair loss. My mother has always had a beautiful head of hair. All throughout her 20's and 30's it was waist length. She's been wearing her hair bra strap length for years now. However, over the past several months, she has been experiencing MAJOR hair loss and thinning. We believe that stress, her Diabetes, and slacking on her hair care regimen are the major contributing factors. The last thing that she wanted to do was take another type medication. After I talked to her about the things that I've learned at LHCF, she has decided to follow a few things from my regimen. If this does not work, she will seek medical treatment.
Her regimen washing and conditioning once a week, using Coconut Oil as a moisturizer, cutting out the blow dryer, combing and brushing less, using a Boar Brush, protective bun styling, cutting out curling irons, wearing a satin bonnet to bed, and cutting out hair dye until we can get it healthy again.
My mother has always been a big vitamin buff. She's been taking vitamins for well over 25 years now.
Her vitamin regimen
Selenium
Garlic
Vitamin E
Calcium+D
Folic Acid
Lecithin
Multi Antioxidant
Her hair products
Amla Hair Oil
Parachute Coconut Oil
Aubrey Organics GPB
Blackseed Hair Pomade
Aubrey Organics Island Naturals Butter Shampoo
A little background info on her hair...
Hair Type: 2A
Color: jet black going gray
Current Length: 14 inches
Texture: naturally curly/wavy
Growth: was growing extremely fast, but slowed do to the damage
Problems: hair loss and it tends to be very dry (especially in the summer)
Early/Mid April Progress....
Well...no good news to report this time. Mom has been slacking on her hair care regimen. She has been washing every 2 weeks instead of on a weekly basis...and she is losing hair like she was before. Frequent washing seems to be the key to having and maintaining healthy hair. Hopefully Mom will get back into her regimen soon. She was disappointed in her last wash with all of the hair loss...hopefully..it will motivate her. She got a long over due trim on the 17th of April to get rid of the thin ends. Hope for better news to report in the next update.
March Progress 2004
My mother's hair is really coming along nicely!!! She only missed one week of washing (which is excellent for her). She has gained about a half inch for the month. Which brings the grand total to an inch and a half for the past two months. This regimen is really working for her!
Aubrey Organics GPB
March 8th 2004. Last Saturday...I kept insisting to my mother that she give my new Aubrey Organics GPB Conditioner and Naturals Island Butter Shampoo a try (my mother isn't into trying new things). FINALLY she decided to use a little of both for her weekly wash and condition. Usually...the tub is FULL of hair. After deep conditioning for 10-15 minutes with GPB...there were only a few hairs in the tub! We were absolutely amazed! These two products will be added to her weekly regimen. Her hair progress is really coming along nicely! :)
Selenium
My mother added this vitamin into her regimen in 1998. When she was taking it...her hair grew out longer, and thickened up nicely. When she was diagnosed with Diabetes type 2 a couple of years ago, her doctor said that it was best for her to stop taking it (didn't mix well well with her meds). During the time when she was not taking this vitamin...her hair started going down hill. I'm not saying that this was the only contributing factor, I'm saying that with her excluding it from her regimen it didn't help things. Diabetes can wreck havok on a persons body...as well as on their hair. Now that she has started taking it again, her hair is comming along nicely.
Regimen Progress For February...
My mother has been on her new hair regimen for about a month now. Her hair was comming out in LARGE clumps, but now is has slowed a great deal. About a month ago, you could literally touch her hair...and large clumps would just fall out. I started giving her a weekly scalp masassage before she washes and conditions her hair. I think that the combination of things we are doing is what's working. She also has 1 inch of new growth. Not only is the Amla oil very moisturizing...it is also conditioning her hair making it stronger.
